All I Want for My Birthday Is to Help Others

Today is my 27th birthday! I’m very thankful that I made it another year. It was a close one, but I did it.

In honor of my birthday and the struggles I have had this year, I would like to ask for donations to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). I will be doing the Out of The Darkness walk in Metro Detroit on September 23rd along with my family and my goal is to collect $500 in donations.

It also happens to be National Suicide Prevention Week. Did you know that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States? According to AFSP, each year 44,193 Americans die by suicide and for every suicide 25 attempt. It is also important to know the warning signs. If a loved one is talking about being a burden to others, feeling trapped, experiencing unbearable pain, having no reason to live, or killing themselves or they are increasing their alcohol or drug use, looking for a way to kill themselves such as searching online for materials or means, acting recklessly, withdrawing from activities, isolating from family and friends, sleeping too much or too little, visiting or calling people to say goodbye, giving away prized possessions, aggression or have moods including depression, loss of interest, rage, irritability, humiliation, anxiety. Please take them seriously.

If you can find it in your heart to support me and others like me and donate to this cause that is so near and dear to my heart, I would greatly appreciate it. It means so much to have so many supporters in my journey.
